Communication can be defined as “the process of passing information and understanding from one person to another.” (Quora) Communication is one important factor within the nursing community because it allows workers to effectively do their job. Communication is not only relaying a message, but also understanding how others will interpret it. The different categories of communication are; verbal, nonverbal, written, and visualization.
Examples of verbal communication: face-to-face, phone, television
Examples of non-verbal communication: body language, gesture
Examples of written communication: letters, e-mails, books, internet
Examples of visualization: graphs, charts
Through many studies it has been shown that “good communication between nurses contributes to their ability to provide patients with individualized care.” Having good communication skills is beneficial for a nurse when dealing with both coworkers and patients. Communication with patients is important because it allows patients to feel comfortable. From personal experience when a nurse gives me their full attention and show me that they actual care about my health I feel more comfortable talking to them about my problem. It allows the proper care, with good communication nurses are able to gather the proper information. Communication is important within coworkers because it allow the facility to operate effectively. In a workplace, employees feed off each other, so with proper communication things are able to flow.
“Without effective communication skills, serious errors that may cost patients their lives can occur.” Being a nurse you’re responsible for the well-being of your patients. It is important that you know the proper material provided by patients or other coworkers to provide the correct care. For example, a patient sick with a fever, but because of wrong communication the patient is diagnosed with having pneumonia and because of that the patient is being treated for the wrong thing which can cause more health issues. The way you act or communicate will determine the “vibe” for the entire interaction.
Communication is used in many different forms within the nursing community. From schooling all the way till actually working as nurse, communication is used. It is important to use and understand communication for the gain of knowledge.
Communication is practiced in the nursing community in many ways. This text is used in school, offices and hospitals. An example of communication in a hospital is being checked in at the front desk by a receptionist, the receptionist telling the assistant your problem, the assistant telling the nurses your issues and later seeing the nurse for proper care.
